Genetics, Lifestyle and Weight Loss: A New Approach to Health

It’s the time for New Year’s Resolutions, but please, don’t do it!  Let me explain!  I love to surround myself with people who have achieved great things. I listen to podcasts, read books, attend conferences and seminars — all to be influenced by the fact that growth can happen at any age.  If you adopt the attitude of just “being better today than yesterday” it doesn’t matter how old you are, you just truly get better with age.

Resolutions, as I’ve said before, typically don’t last more than a few days, in fact a few weeks would be pretty amazing.  Resolutions are created to fix problems, which can be exhausting.  Instead, if you set an intention to create habits that help you feel your best (and you actually start to enjoy these new habits or at least how they make you feel), it is a game-changer. Watch the goodness start to flow in your life!

As weight loss is typically the subject that comes to mind for most Americans this time of year, let’s discuss it.  Body In Balance Wellness Center has always maintained the philosophy of creating health, so this year in your efforts to become the best version of you, let’s talk about how examining your genetics and epigenetics (the study of lifestyle) can help you feel your best, create longevity, and allow you to create health, specifically regarding food, exercise, and stress management tools.

ApoE is a gene that can have 3 variants: E2, E3, or E4.  The ApoE gene controls fat transport in your body. What has been discovered about ApoE is that implementing lifestyle strategies in a directed way based on your genetic type can improve your cholesterol, enhance your longevity, and lead to weight loss. (It can also decrease your risk for diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, heart disease, diabetes, etc.) With all the information about Paleo eating, Ketogenic diets, or even all the nationally advertised weight loss programs, how do you know what would actually work for you and your health?

Have you ever tried a Ketogenic eating plan or vegetarian eating plan and gained weight or felt awful?  It could have been related to your ApoE genotype. While genetics is the study of what your individual DNA profile demonstrates, we now know that epigenetics and the study of how your lifestyle impacts your genes is truly powerful in terms of changing disease outcomes. When you combine genetics and epigenetics, you can become a powerhouse in your ability to live your best, healthiest life.

Once we have your ApoE data (determining whether you are an E2, E3, or E4 type), we know what your food intake should look like in terms of carbohydrate, protein, and fat intake. For example, some people truly will be healthier eating a higher carbohydrate diet.  Others will be healthier having a balance between protein and carbs, and others will thrive with a protein and fat balanced diet. The right combination will lead to weight loss with ease and prevent disease! With ApoE typing, we also know more about the intensity and type of exercise you need to be performing in terms of disease prevention and feeling your best.
